Bad guys we love to hate
Love this lesson about creating character depth by Joanna Jenkins who was in conversation with Ben Hobson at Avid Reader.
What a treat to hear about Joanna’s formula for enhancing characterisation - she levels out the good guy Vs bad guy playing field by giving her antagonists really likeable traits. This sounds easy, but when writing we so often fall (even subconsciously) into describing our antagonists with a slightly bitter taste in our mouths. Accidental foreshadowing? Maybe. But being purposeful and presenting the bad guys as everyday relatable people in our society ensures a disturbing authenticity - and guarantees fabulous book club debates!
Love your work Joanna and can’t wait to get stuck into The Bluff.
